Grammar∣ not... nor... 的用法

Tickets will not be redeemable for cash or credit at any time, nor will they be replaced if lost or stolen.

本題有兩個子句,前面 will not be redeemable 是否定,後面說「遺失、被偷也不能更換」,也是否定,並且 will they be replaced 是倒裝,這樣就要選 nor。

Mr. Wang is not my English teacher, nor has he ever taught me before.

I was never told, nor would I have known to seek out an answer.

The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission.

I would have nothing to do with it, nor would most of us.

這裡省略 have anything to do with it.

My mom didn't believe me, nor did my father.

Grammar∣ except, besides

Except red and blue, there are several other colors. (X)
Besides red and blue, there are several other colors. (O)
I eat anything besides cucumber. (X)
I eat anything except cucumber. (O)
She will never show up except you beg her. (X)
She will never show up unless you beg her. (O)
要表達「除非~情況下」後面又是連接有主詞有動詞的句子時,記得使用 unless 或者 except when, except if, except that才正確。
C. except
Jane seldom goes out except working. (X)
Jane seldom goes out except to work. (O)
My sister is good at everything except to take an exam. (X)
My sister is good at everything except taking an exam. (O)

<例>:I can go out at any time except after midnight.
Jim said he wanted to do nothing except sleeping. (X)
Jim said he wanted to do nothing except sleep. (O)
Besides John, everyone had a very good time. (X)
Apart from John, everyone had a very good time. (O)

Weekly Diary∣2013.03.20

I felt not good at Monday morning because went to bed late. When Ivanisevicy and I have finished all works and laid down the bed to sleep, we heard some familiar noise, which was produced by the mosquito and very annoyed. At first, we just tried to ignore the voice and supposed they might disappear soon. But, we found we were wrong very soon as they, the little bloody insect, had flied around our ears with noisy sound and continued to seek the opportunities to absorb our blood. Under this condition, we hardly fell asleep for two hours. So, I decided to go outside and buy mosquito coils back. Afterward, through burning the mosquito coils, the little monsters went out our room eventually. Unfortunately, I still had to get up early at 6 am at Monday morning, that is to say, I just could sleep for four hours. As a result, I felt very tired and lacked the energy to deal with the office affairs, which put me in a foul mind.

Grammar∣ in which

You can use “in which” as a precise way to introduce a relative clause after a noun that refers to a place or to a time.

For example

In my laboratory there is a blue cabinet where old equipment is stored.
→In my laboratory there is a blue cabinet in which old equipment is stored.

The man sat at the computer where his old accounting files were stored. (place)
→The man sat at the computer in which his old accounting files were stored.

It was a time when the old were revered as sages. (time)
→It was a time in which the old were revered as sages. (time)

Use “in which” to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition, especially in more formal writing. Ending a sentence with a preposition has become more accepted in some formal writing situations, but you will need to refer to your analysis of your audience’s expectations.

For example
This is the computer that the virus was discovered in. (Informal)

You can change it to
This is the computer in which the virus was discovered. (Formal)

Grammar∣a little, a little bit, a bit

a bit 及 a little的區別

Will you please turn down the radio [a bit/a little]?

She's [a bit/a little] afraid of the teacher.

Her mother feels [a bit/a little] better today.

The speaker spoke up a [bit/a little] so as to make himself heard more clearly.

2).for a bit和for a little意思相同,相當於for a while或for a short time,可互換。例如:
Let's rest for [a bit/a little].

1).a little可以直接修飾不可數名詞,而a bit修飾不可數名詞時,只能用a bit of。例如:
Tom has a little money./Tom has a bit of money.
但是,當a little修飾的名詞前有this,that,所有格等限定詞時,也要用a little of結構。例如:
I want to drink a little of that drink.

a bit of的另一種形式是bits of,a little則沒有這種變體。
例如:
Besides this,he used part of an old army wireless set,and some bits of wood.

2).a bit和a little與not連用時,意思大相逕庭。
not a bit=not at all,意為「一點也不」;not a little=very much,意為「十分、相當、極其」。
例如:
He is not a bit tired.=He is not tired at all.
It doesn't make a bit of sense to me.=It doesn't make sense to me at all.
He is not a little tired.

a little 及 a little bit的區別
a little bit 是口語當中常用到的,外國人特喜歡說話時用到a little bit。
a little 可以修飾名詞 a little water
可以修飾形容詞 a little cold
可以修飾副詞 a little loud

a little stinky
a little bit stinky

Grammar∣once 的用法

Once

Once you start, you will never give up.
Once you begin to read it, you will like it.
Physics is easy to learn once you understand the rules.

Once he lived in America, but now he lives in England.
His song was once very popular among the young people.
My father once employed a young man named Johnson.

The old professor comes to see us once a week.
Tell us the story once more.

I once went to Shanghai.
I went to Shanghai once.

5. once
1at once(立刻;馬上)(通常置於句末)
All of you should go there at once.
Finish the task at once.
2once again(再一次;又一次),相當於once more(通常置於句末)
Let me hear you sing once again/ once more.
Read the passage once more.
3once in a while(偶爾;間或)(通常置於句末)
We went to see our English teacher once in a while.
4all at once(突然),相當於suddenly(通常置於句首)
All at once, they rushed out altogether.
5once upon a time(很早以前;從前)(通常置於句首)
Once upon a time there was an old man named John Hill.
